The XVII General General of the Teresian Association, gathered in the House Santa María de Los Negrales, elected Maite Uribe Bilbao, as the President for 2012 - 2018.
Maite Uribe Bilbao replaces Loreto Ballester Reventós, who has led the General Government of the Teresian Association for the last twelve years. This is the longest tenure allowed by the Statutes.
After some time of personal reflection, the new General Directress accepted the appointment according to the ritual written by St. Pedro Poveda for the Assembly of 1928. This ritual has been used without interruption ever since. In a symbolic manner, she also received a copy of the Statutes. Also, in this Assembly, the eighty-eight participants elected the six people that will accompany Maite Uribe in the new Governing Council.
The election was presided by D. Fidel Herráez, Auxiliary Bishop of Madrid, as a sign of the Teresian Association’s belonging to the Church. When the election was completed, the name of the elected General Directress was forwarded to the President of the Pontifical Council for the Laity, Cardinal Stanislaw Rylko, since the Teresian Association falls under the International Associations of the Laity.
Maite Uribe Bilbao has become the sixth General Directress of the Work founded by Saint Pedro Poveda. The first one was Mª Josefa Segovia Morón.
The Teresian Association welcomes Maite Uribe Bilbao as the new General Directress, thanks her for her availability, and pledges support and collaboration in the leadership, dynamism, and service to the Work founded by Saint Pedro Poveda. This Work begins its second centenary with hope and renewed excitement with the gift of fraternity and evangelical audacity that will make possible the “exciting task of awakening the Christian and human conscience in the world of education, culture, and the integral advancement of each person,” as Pope Benedict XVI said in the message he sent on the occasion of the Centenary that has recently ended.
“We have a most engaging evangelizing mission, each one in his/her own place, and we feel the strong call from Pedro Poveda to work for those for whom God gave us the vocation. It is for this world that we contemplate with passion, as God looks at it, and to which we wish to commit with greater audacity in this second Centenary, being witnesses of hope,” said the new General Directress in a greeting to all the members of the Association that was transmitted via streaming TV.
Biographical Data of Maite Uribe Bilbao
Maite (Amada) Uribe Bilbao was born in San Salvador, El Salvador, on April 20, 1951. As daughter of Spaniards, later he became a citizen of Spain.
She graduated from Valencia Medical School and became a clinical specialist in psychotherapy at the Complutense University of Madrid (1980). In 1996 she completed her training in Spiritual Discernment in the United States. She joined the Teresian Association in 1968.
In the last six years she has served on the Governing Council of the Teresian Association. From this vantage point she has overseen activities and projects of the Teresian Association, mainly in Asia and America.
She has been directress of the Formation Department (2001-2007), Directress of the Spirituality and Formation Center Villa Marini, Roma (1988 - 2001), and delegate of the General Directress in India and the Holy Land (1996 a 2001). She directed the Poveda University Residence of Oviedo from1994 -1995.
