PALMA DE MALLORCA, Balearic Islands, Spain.
On March 30th, more than 600 participants in a sports competition of TA (Teresian Association) schools in Spain got together at Son Moix, Palma de Mallorca, EDIT 2014, for the closing ceremonies and to pass on the torch to the host school for next year.
The 25th EDIT competition, which takes place every year since 1989, ended. In one of the issues of “Crítica” Magazine of that time we find the following statement: "In November 1989, with a greater awareness of educational change and with the urgency of coordinating the different areas of educational practices, physical education teachers of schools run by the Teresian Association in Spain came toghether to reflect and work on the impact of the educational reform in their field, which is increasingly important in the development of our students." The proposal was to see “sports as an educational opportunity for values education."
Students from the 19 TA educational centers shared an intense sport and recreation program, centered on EDIT principles: joy, service and cooperation; effort and self-improvement; knowledge of the spiritual, cultural, historical and natural heritage of each area where they meet. This time Pedro Poveda School in Palma de Mallorca was the host.
EDIT2014 Oath
It is traditional that the participants make a commitment to live according to the values of EDIT. On behalf of all, Paula Moyano, Miquel Martinez, and Carlos Gonzalez read the oath, which pledged to live the encounter "in the spirit of cooperation of EDIT”:
Everyone participating in this 25th EDIT competition wish to live an experience in which conviviality, sportsmanship, and friendship are the bonds that unite us, not only during these days but throughout our lives.
Therefore we promise:
- To create bonds of friendship, companionship and solidarity among us. To respect all who are part of EDIT: classmates and teachers, and also our environment, both nature and the school facilities
- To enrich ourselves with the cultural diversity of each of the participating schools, appreciating all that unites us and also learning from our differences
- To make sports a party where competitiveness is secondary so that we may emphasize participation, fun, togetherness, and effort
During this sporting event we hope
- That the spirit that inspired the birth of EDIT may remain and that in these games we may strengthen it, if possible, to transmit it to future generations
- That we may we live according to the style of TA schools
- That this experience may help us throughout our lives, and it may help us grow in friendship and love of sports."
The blog that was open for EDIT2014 recorded many of the activities that were carried out with photos, videos and testimonials. It also described the inauguration and explained the meaning of the Logo. There were also interviews with participants and reports on activities such as rehearsals, cultural day, the Eucharist, the moments of recreation, city tours, games in the square, the closing ceremony, and the party that was celebrated in the hotel where participants were staying. As was learned by the testimony of some participants "this encounter has been incredible."
The local press reported the meeting as significant not only because of the task to mobilize a large group of teenagers to Palma de Mallorca from 19 different cities in Spain, but also because of the original and meaningful message of the event.
