MADRID Spain.
TA Members in Spain collaborate with the TA-supported NGO for Development InteRed in the campaign “Let's make an Alliance for Education.” These entities have the same vision and mission on social transformation through education and humanizing actions to build a more just and united society, recognizing the dignity and human rights of each person.

According to UNESCO, in the world there are 774 million adults who can not read or write; of which 495 million are women living in a state of illiteracy; and of the 57 million children without access to schooling, 36 million are girls.

The right to quality, inclusive, and equitable education should be a reality for millions of children and adolescents who are unschooled because literacy helps reduce poverty, increase economic opportunities, empower women, encourage participation in public life, promote awareness of self-worth and improve the dignity and life prospects of people.

Given that completing primary school is no guarantee of literacy, quality education during childhood is of vital importance to the education of youth; around 77% of young people are unable to read or understand a sentence. These young people who go to school for a short time will join the ranks of illiterate adult. UNESCO believes that children need to spend at least five or six years in school to become literate and preserve their literacy in adulthood.

We are aware that not knowing how to read or write is the main indicator of exclusion and inequality and that quality literacy is a right that increases opportunities and the autonomy of persons; there are still people, mostly girls and women, without access to literacy.
