MADRID, Spain.
On December 3, anniversary of the birth of Saint Pedro Poveda, the International Musical Competition “Pedro Poveda, Victoria Díez, Josefa Segovia, with another rhythm,” convened by Pedro Poveda Secretariat, took place. The idea was to recreate the life and testimony of these people through musical language.
The event was held in Madrid, with attendance of about 300 people. On behalf of the Government of the Teresian Association (TA), its President Maite Uribe and Vice-President María Dolores Martín attended the event. Friends, alumni, students, TA members, a large number of people from Veritas Institute (Madrid), a group of participants from Burgos, Badajoz, and Madrid; relatives and others participated in the event.
The introductory remarks made reference to Pedro Poveda: Poveda repeated that we have to "dare"- and Pedro Poveda Secretariat dared to convene this International Music Contest and it turned out great.
Thirty-five musical pieces of different styles and origins were submitted to the competition: from Argentina, Belgium, Spain (Badajoz, Burgos, Madrid), Taiwan, and Uruguay. The participants exuded enthusiasm and gratitude was expressed to everyone. In the event, eight songs were presented, the best ones that best followed the guidelines of the competition.
The jury was composed of three specialists in music: Pilar Arrate Bilbao, renowned musical authority, who holds a degree in Piano and another one on Musical Pedagogy. Music Professor at the Castellano-Manchega University and Veritas Institute, among others; Pilar Molina has a musical vocation. A participant in numerous recitals and "musical moments". "I owe to music many years of active membership in the group that the Philippine Embassy formed to make our music known," she said. For more than 20 years she has been responsible for a great choir; and Carmen María López Fernández de Córdoba. She studied music at the Conservatory of Guadalajara, later focusing more on light music. Linked to religious music, she has sung with various groups and has participated in festivals and other musical contests. She currently sings with the “Spirit to All” group.
After listening to the eight pieces selected, the Judges awarded the First Prize to a tango: "Adiós lunfardo a Guadix," by Abraham Satut, from Montevideo (Uruguay). This tango was danced by a couple of dancers, Carmen and Rafael,who belong to Milonga tango school in Madrid.
The second prize was awarded to a piano composition: "Abriendo escuelas", by young Extremadura author Guadalupe Vilá. The piece is dedicated to the pedagogical work of Poveda, to his resistance to difficulty and to the courage of Josefa Segovia as she continued the Work of Poveda: the Teresian Association.
The third was a double award: One was the song "Háblame" from Madrid and dedicated to the elders who know Josefa Segovia. The authors are Amparo Alcalá and Blanca Arce. The other was “Ahora como nunca,” of the pre-ACIT groups and ACIT Joven of Burgos, directed by Ana María Sánchez.
The Jury also granted three Honorable Mentions: one to "El santo de las cuevas", by Argentine María Florencia Pedrini (Buenos Aires), another to the "Himno de la Alegría", a song from Belgium, performed by the Sint-Jan Antwerp choir; and another one to “Yoquise dar algo más”, by Rufina Cárdenas and interpreted by a choir of students of Veritas Institute (Madrid).
Finally, and out of competition, the song “Decisión a Guadix,” by Abraham Satut, was presented as a special tribute and congratulations to Pedro Poveda.
After thanking everyone for such a great participation and the opportunity to share in this act, the attendees left the room with the good rhythm reflected in their faces.
