BILBAO, Spain.
Ikasbide School of Bilbao reports on the actions taken during the first quarter of the school year (Northern hemisphere) on the educational proposal chosen, “Act with care, transform reality" (Errealitatea eraldatu, zaintzak biziz), with "the objective to intensify efforts to mobilize the educational community of the school within the framework of the campaign promoted by InteRed."
One proposal has been to develop service-learning projects from the perspective of Gandhi’s thought: "You must be the change you wish to see in the world." Students, school staff and families have joined in various actions, some of which were organized by the school and tutors and teachers organized others.
"No one has been left out or remained indifferent," says the school administration. "They have worked consistently on the need for the role of all and of each one, and on the fact that change must start with ourselves.”
At the beginning of the school year, the proposal and actions for each stage were presented at the meetings with the students’ families. The first, "embrace your school," was for all the educational community, and it was preceded with classroom work on the Decalogue of Agenda 21, which provides for the care of our immediate physical environment, people, and the relationships among them.
For the second year in a row we collaborated with the Food Bank of Bizkaia with renewed enthusiasm and greater role of sixth-grade students. After visiting the premises of the food bank, they have shared their visit to younger students and invited them to collaborate.
Secondary school students have been charged with sensitizing the educational community. They did so painting murals, including the development of a banner with the slogan of the campaign and information to families. They also took care of the collection and storage of food over a week.
Along with these actions in the classroom high school and elementary school students have done service-learning projects for a possible change, with the involvement of everyone, no matter how small the projects were.
Endless proposals, gestures, actions and dreams arose and, little by little, they are sinking in and deepening. This makes the commitment and contribution of each one to change to be part of each person’s life and of the school.
