MADRID, Spain.
Members and friends of the Teresian Association (TA), students and colleagues have been present at the funeral home to say good-bye to M ª Angeles Galino Carrillo, who died March 8 in Madrid
On the evening of that day a Mass was held in the chapel of the funeral home. Frs. Augusto Hortal SJ and José María Martín Patino SJ were the concelebrants.
At the beginning of the celebration, Maite Uribe, President of the Teresian Association read the message she wrote to communicate the news of the death of the former President from 1977 to 1988. Concha Romera, director of the TA in Spain, shared a few words of thanksgiving. Rosalia Gimenez read a text of remembrance and gratitude.
In his homily, Fr. Augusto Hortal said "now we make silence before the mystery of death that has an air of dawn in the Gospel. We celebrate a new beginning, the certainty of life, the certainty of the apostles, the certainty of Angeles ... In the Gospel we read about the apostles preparing for abundant fishing through the presence of Jesus. We can imagine the final encounter of Angeles with the Lord."
He recalled Angeles’ affability, her capacity to welcome others, and her joy, "traits that Pope Francisco is asking of Christians," he said. "Angeles is the one who is now, not the one who was before," said Fr. Augusto Hortal. "Her presence is still with us in spirit, as intercessor on behalf of the Teresian Association, educators and the people who cared for her."
José María Martín Patino SJ, former personal secretary to Cardinal Vicente Enrique y Tarancón, also wanted to share a few words. "It is no coincidence that Angeles Galino left us on this Women’s day. She was a renowned woman in Spanish society; she was the first university professor in this country. She also had a place in the Church, where he lived with a lay missionary spirit. In her way of living and contributing to the development of the laity, she was ahead of Vatican II.” "Angeles Galino was a woman who had something to say in the Church,” he said.
"I join in the sentiments of the TA and I congratulate you; today is a day of glory, she was an example for all. I join in the tribute and prayer to imitate her example, "he concluded.
On behalf of the TA, Concha Romera expressed some words of gratitude: "There are people to whom God gives the mission of providing guiding light for the journey of others in a unique way. So, we remember Angeles Galino, a woman with the ability to be a helping hand to understand each person as well as society and other human groups," she said.
She continued: "We recognize and thank God that gave us Angeles as light and guidance. We appreciate the light that she gave to the world of education by teaching how to read the History of Pedagogy and of Educational Institutions, convinced that it is possible to solve the problems of society through education, as Pedro Poveda had done early in the century.
We acknowledge her testimony of a way of being a woman in the context of the university, research, scientific publications, with the eyes on educators in public education, teachers in rural areas, following the steps of Josefa Segovia, who was Superintendent in Jaen, while promoting the formation of young university students and that of the first female university residence in Spain, created by Pedro Poveda.
We recognize and value, perhaps because there is a particular need at this time, a way of acting in political life when she served as Director General of High School and Vocational Education.
We appreciate her thinking and contribution to the Church on the development of the laity, a laity with a specific mission ‘at the heart of the world.’ She trained lay people, supported the reflection of priests and of the Church, and has left us a deep mark on the spirituality of the Teresian Association.
We recognize her contribution, from thought and praxis, to build bridges between countries and cultures through international programs and organizations that are committed to appreciate the dignity of every person and every culture.
We recognize her specific uniqueness in the history of the Teresian Association, her continued involvement in the formation of people, her contribution to guide our presence and institutional commitments in different countries as well as her guidance of the Teresian Association in the crucial stages as Lay Association in the Church.
We give special thanks for some of the gifts she has left the TA: prayer, study and commitment, fraternity, simplicity, profound humility, etc.
As we ponder the different facets of Angels Galino’s personality and recognize the way she realized God’s call for the sake of humanity, we all experience that we are carrying something from her to the present time. ‘The lives of those who fulfilled their mission in this world do not end but live on in those who continue the mission.’
For this reason we express our deep gratitude to those who represent the church, civil society, educational institutions, educators, families, adolescents and youth, and the Teresian Association"
The Eucharist will be held in the chapel of the Funeral Home on Sunday, March 9, at 11:30 AM. Later, at 12:50 PM the funeral procession will depart for the cemetery in Madrid.
