On behalf of the Spanish Society for the History of Education (SEDHE) Agustín Benito Escolano has informed its members of the death of Professor Maria Angeles Galino Carrillo in Madrid.
"After an exemplary, fulfilled life that ended on Working Women's Day, we wish our teacher and friend to rest in the peace she hoped for from her firm belief," says Augustine Escolano in his message.
Also, Gabriela Ossenbach, President of SEDHE, wrote: "All those that in recent times have reflected on the origin and formation of the history of education as a field of research and university discipline in Spain have recognized the crucial role played by Angeles Galino in this process, not only for being the first professor of our discipline and teacher of some of the most important Spanish researchers in this field, but also for her profoundly humanistic and open conception of the university, which contrasted sharply with that maintained by representatives of other areas of Pedagogy at the University of the 60s and 70s.
In a short piece I wrote recently in memory of Julio Ruiz Berrio I mentioned the concept of university that was felt in the Department managed by Angeles Galino when I was a student of Pedagogy, ‘a seminary filled with books and students where they breathed a true university environment that I could not find in other departments of Pedagogy.’ We must also remember that in 1978 Angeles Galino was summoned to a meeting in Oxford (UK), when the International Society for the History of Education (ISCHE) was founded and to which SEDHE joined since its creation in 1989 as one of its group members.
With the death of Angeles Galino, and recently of her disciple Julio Ruiz Berrio, the History of Education lost two very important figures. However, the work of both, along with that of many others of their generation, shapes a solid foundation of our discipline. On my own behalf and on behalf of the Spanish Society for the History of Education, I express condolences and the recognition of Galino Angeles, to her family and disciples, and to the Teresian Association."
