InteRed, an NGO for Development, supported by the Teresian Association, seeks cooperation and solidarity support for reconstruction and furnishing the classrooms damaged by a fire at Our Lady of Africa School in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea. The incident occurred because of a short circuit initiated in a property nearby; it has caused irreparable damage in four high school classrooms.
The educational community of Our Lady of Africa School of the Teresian Association in Malabo regrets the material damage but appreciates that there have been no injuries or casualties. They say: "the sadness of this experience does not quench the strength and the will to fight to see, as soon as possible, the building reconstructed."
The material damage is as follows:
- The 300 m2 roof and ceiling of the school.
- Windows and doors.
- Furniture: 200 tables and 200 chairs.
- 4 boards.
- The electrical circuitry.
- The tiles of the floor.
- The walls of the school
The 150 high school students and 120 students in vocational education have been temporarily relocated to a tutoring room, a warehouse, and the library to continue with training and educational work. These conditions are precarious because of the small space and the library should be used for other activities, such as checking out books and to study.
Our Lady of Africa School is located in the neighborhood of Campo Yaoundé in Malabo, in the area called New Building. This is the most populous city of Malabo district with 25,000 - 30,000 inhabitants, mostly Guineans and some foreigners from various African countries. It began operation in the 1983-1984 school year with a unitary classroom for children to respond to the complete absence of schools in the area. Today the school serves, in the morning and afternoon shifts, the following levels: special education, preschool education, primary education, junior high school, first high school years, and vocational training. The school also offers the possibility of obtaining the Certificate of Primary Studies for adults.
